Migrants Labour Insertion in Multicultural Agricultural Teams

MILIMAT is a project for rural entrepreneurs, farmers and migrant workers in the farming sector. We seek to help these groups to create multicultural work teams, based on mutual understanding, respect for other cultures and the firm conviction that diversity can enrich working environments in the agricultural sector.

We promote labour and social integration on farms while ensuring that migrant workers’ rights are respected.

To achieve this goal we train young entrepreneurs and migrant workers in the agricultural sector. We encourage all parties involved to be able to participate in new multicultural teams in a professional and responsible manner. This is essential to ensure social and labour integration on farms where codes of conduct based on diversity, equality and respect are followed to guarantee the rights of all workers.

MILIMAT aims to

Promote the recruitment and inclusion of migrant workers

Promote the recruitment and inclusion of migrant workers in rural areas by increasing the training and knowledge of employers and workers, favouring fair and equal labour relations.

Foster knowledge of European labour rights and social values

Foster knowledge of European labour rights and social values among rural migrant workers, encouraging their commitment and social participation in the defence of these rights.

Encourage a business ethic for agricultural entrepreneurs

Encourage a business ethic for agricultural entrepreneurs based on the management of multicultural teams, understanding the relationship between values, culture, work and labour rights.

Create channels of communication and mutual support

Create channels of communication and mutual support between agricultural entrepreneurs and workers, to increase their capacity for commitment against labour exploitation and discrimination based on race or gender.

More information about the project

What is the background?

European countries – and especially France, Spain, Italy, Austria and Greece – receive significant migrant flows, and agriculture plays a crucial role in their economies. Despite being ideal locations for integration, many migrants in rural and agricultural areas face extreme vulnerability and exploitation. Labour rights violations, lack of social protection, and exposure to violence are the main issues affecting them, particularly women.

MILIMAT addresses the need to provide small and medium farms with training in communication and management of multicultural teams, and to offer migrant workers knowledge about their rights to achieve greater social integration.

Expected results

Report on the possibilities of integrating migrant workers into rural communities through agriculture as an economic and social development resource. The report will consist of a Workshop Summary, five National Reports, and a Transnational Analysis Report.

Best Practices Manual for integrating migrant workers into rural communities through socially sustainable agriculture. This manual will include case studies.

Training modules and introductory videos on building, participating in, and managing multicultural teams in the agricultural sector, as well as on migration, labour, and values.

A training and collaborative platform based on the “MILIMAT Code of Good Conduct”.
